The incident saw a 55-year-old employee struck by the vehicle and dragged under it. He suffered damage his lower spine, pelvis, ribs and leg and shoulder, and he sustained cuts to his head.

Taking preventative action

Responding to the case, HSE inspector Fiona Coffey noted that insufficient preventative measures had been taken. She stated: “The company had been visited by [the] HSE six months prior to the incident and had been given verbal instruction on how to better control workplace transport, which a director and the health and safety manager had agreed to.

“As a result of the company’s failure to implement this guidance, their employee suffered painful and life-changing injuries.”

Ms Coffey went on to point out that vehicles remain a major cause of serious and fatal injuries at work. Indeed, last year a total of 27 employees were killed after being hit by moving vehicles, while more than 1,800 were seriously injured.
