Whilst many sectors of industry might be suffering, one could argue that the value put on health and safety is increasing. One of the features of modern business is that it endeavours to protect its employees, and ensure their health and wellbeing for the future.

“How very kind,” you might say. However, there are obvious practical benefits to maintaining a happy and healthy working environment, not least because it increases employee efficiency and reduces the amount of days off that employees take sick.

Intrinsic in ensuring that workplaces are healthy places are health & safety jobs. In all sorts of ways, health and safety jobs exist to help businesses, and sometimes nudge businesses, into becoming more humane and more healthy environments.

An important aspect of health safety jobs is ensuring that businesses meet legislation. Business today is more legislature heavy than it’s ever been. It can be a challenge to live up to the demands of contemporary health and safety legislature, however this challenge can be met with the right approach, and help from health and safety legislation.

Communication is also important. Health and safety is all about people, and people get along when they’re given the opportunity to communicate. Communication of employee problems and health issues is a key way to solve them, or at least come up with better ways to accommodate them.

In the final analysis, health & safety jobs aren’t just an addition to modern business, they are instrumental in its effectiveness.

In business, health and safety is always a priority. The wellbeing of personnel and members of the public cannot be placed at unnecessary risk. If it is and accidents occur, the consequences can be serious.

So, it’s important that when you’re on the looking for people to fill health and safety jobs, you succeed in getting the perfect candidates.

Illustrating the importance of effective preventions

A recent case involving a firm based in Chesterfield demonstrated the significance of effective safety measures. During a hearing at North East Derbyshire magistrates, the company pleaded guilty to breaching safety laws in relation to an accident in which an employee was seriously injured by a heavy goods vehicle.

Because of its failings, the company incurred a fine of £8,000 and was ordered to pay costs of £7,435. According to the Health and Safety Executive (HSE), it did not proactively risk assess and implement control measures for its workplace transport.

The incident saw a 55-year-old employee struck by the vehicle and dragged under it. He suffered damage his lower spine, pelvis, ribs and leg and shoulder, and he sustained cuts to his head.

Taking preventative action

Responding to the case, HSE inspector Fiona Coffey noted that insufficient preventative measures had been taken. She stated: “The company had been visited by [the] HSE six months prior to the incident and had been given verbal instruction on how to better control workplace transport, which a director and the health and safety manager had agreed to.

“As a result of the company’s failure to implement this guidance, their employee suffered painful and life-changing injuries.”

Ms Coffey went on to point out that vehicles remain a major cause of serious and fatal injuries at work. Indeed, last year a total of 27 employees were killed after being hit by moving vehicles, while more than 1,800 were seriously injured.

Getting the right people for the job

Here at OS Recruitment, we understand the importance of sourcing the right people to fill health and safety vacancies. These individuals play a crucial role in minimising risk in the workplace and so it’s crucial they’re able to perform their jobs to a high standard.

That’s why we ensure our consultants are highly skilled and are perfectly placed to offer insightful advice and deliver suitable candidates. Meanwhile, we offer a very competitive permanent placement fee on a no placement, no fee basis.

A broad range of candidates

When you come to us in a bid to fill your health and safety jobs, you can be sure you’re getting quality candidates. We operate an extensive database and are able to search using precise criteria, meaning we will find individuals that perfectly match your requirements.

We also appreciate the need for speed and we endeavour to provide the most suitable candidates for a vacancy within 72 hours. This can help to take the pressure off you.

To find out more about why we may be perfectly placed to help you fill your health and safety vacancies, just take a look around our website or get in touch.

Job satisfaction is a term that is banded around a lot these days. Indeed, managers like the idea of ‘encouraging’ job satisfaction by buying employees off with incentive schemes, whilst employees dream of what it would be like to actually experience the concept first hand.

A large part of job satisfaction comes from seeing your efforts, whatever they may be, deliver tangibly positive results. Naturally, some employment fields are more likely to deliver greater levels of job satisfaction than others.

The occupational health and safety sector is one employment field that can deliver significantly high levels of job satisfaction. This is because operatives who are fortunate enough to be employed in health and safety jobs see their efforts delivering tangibly positive results on a near daily basis. In fact, people employed in health and safety jobs can go home at the end of each day knowing that they have helped to keep sometimes very large numbers of people from coming to any harm; and that is nothing if not satisfying.

Of course, this level of job satisfaction comes at a cost. Indeed, occupational health and safety officer jobs are incredibly important so anybody that is willing to carry out the role needs to be comfortable with shouldering immense responsibility.

So, if you can handle responsibility and have a desire to experience some actual job satisfaction in your work life, health and safety officer jobs might be just what you need.

There is more than one way to develop a career in the health and safety sector. Of course, studying for a suitable degree (and possible period of post-graduate training) is normally the most familiar route taken. However, health and safety jobs are also open to people with NVQ qualifications as well. NVQs can be taken at any time, so even if you didn’t do very well at school, you can still obtain NVQ qualifications that will help you to develop a successful career.

Regardless of how you become qualified, finding suitable health and safety jobs can often be the hardest part of developing your career. Indeed, most health and safety vacancies demand you to be ‘suitably experienced’; and that requirement is hard to meet when you all of your relevant work pertains only to related courses of study.

Happily, we here at OS Recruitment can help as we are able to offer health and safety vacancies of all grades and levels on our website. Even though many of our advertised positions do indeed require applicants to have a minimum qualification of NEBOSH National Diploma level 4 and suitable experience; we also offer a selection of health and safety assistant positions which necessitate far less in terms of qualifications and experience.

So, if you’ve recently become qualified to work in the health and safety sector and are looking for that all-important ‘first rung’ on the health and safety ladder, look no further than us here at OS Recruitment.

Unlike many other areas of industry in the UK, occupational health and safety is in rude health. Indeed, even in the face of yet another potential recession, the occupational health and safety sector is experiencing impressive levels of growth.

There are several reasons for this. Certainly, ever-more comprehensive health and safety regulations along with a vastly more litigiously-minded population are among the chief factors why so many health and safety jobs are now routinely advertised by all manner of companies and businesses.

And, even when organisations have no choice but to downsize their operations and let staff members go; you can be sure that their health and safety officers will not be amongst those departing as they will always be needed to ensure the company adheres to its legal responsibilities.

Quite simply, it can pay dividends to develop a career in the health and safety sector as occupational health and safety jobs are likely to increase in number rather than decrease any time soon.

Developing a career in occupational health and safety can be relatively straightforward, especially if you already have some knowledge of workplace safety. Indeed, with suitable training and study, you too could apply for health and safety jobs and enjoy working in one of the UK’s most robust and rewarding employment sectors.

Something we love to do as part of our blog is promote the Health & Safety Executive (HSE) as a top resource. To a degree, the HSE can affect everyone. Schools, businesses, leisure facilities – they all have to comply with HSE regulations and guidelines. The HSE plays a pivotal role in the infrastructure of health & safety jobs and therefore how vacancies are filled.
Occupational health and safety jobs are about skill, exceptional training and a real understanding of the balance between “nannying” and making an environment sensibly safe. The way we help our clients maximise the effectiveness of their health & safety jobs hunt is through CV management focussing on skills, aptitude, experience and the deep common sense approach that best befits occupational health and safety jobs.
Take the example of H&S in the agricultural sector. Farmers and agricultural workers are tough, sensible folks, and often the heavy feet of health & safety can be met with a grim persona. So the HSE has responded by making its agricultural health & safety (especially in terms of sole trade farmers working long periods alone) as flexible and approachable as possible. Farmers are offered free optional courses and training to help them implement health & safety protocols on their farmland without feeling mollycoddled.
Occupational health and safety jobs can be excessively varied from day to day, particularly for freelance or contracted workers. In such cases the resources of the HSE – particularly online – are invaluable.

A highly criticised move by the Labour government was abolishing the lion’s share of financial aid and student loans for those wishing to study for another degree. For many mature students – perhaps thinking of a career change – this has remained a point of contention.
As a hub of global health and safety vacancies, we spend a great deal of time helping our clients to streamline their CV, develop their skill set and maximise their job hunt potential. Occupational health and safety jobs are within a diverse sector of the employment market that can cover everything from fire safety to offshore living. It’s this diversity of health and safety vacancies’ roles and the abundance of H&S work around the world that’s enticing many mature people to retrain.
Occupational health and safety jobs are still relatively new in terms of established trades. For example, a factory floor foreman will likely be well-versed in H&S due to experience, but what about qualifications? We’re seeing a great new trend for mature students crafting new careers for themselves in the field of H&S.
In the U.K, mature students returning to study for a second degree can get financial assistance for a small number of degrees. These are mostly in the medical arena – dental, nursing etc – but some occupational health areas are covered. However, something like a Professional Development Loan tends to be the most straightforward way to access funding.
