Getting on the Health and Safety Career Ladder

Filed under: Health and safety jobs — admin @ 10:00 am January 25, 2012

Despite what many people may think, health & safety jobs are available for NVQ applicants as well as graduates. Indeed, it is possible to study for NVQs at any time, so even if you leave school with no qualifications at all; you can still progress up to an NVQ level 6 diploma (which is the equivalent of a degree).

Of course, you will still need to find health and safety jobs once your studying comes to an end. Sadly, this can often be a frustrating experience as many health & safety jobs require you to have previous experience.

Naturally, this begs the eternal question: “How do I get experience without a job? And furthermore: “How do I get a job without experience?”

Although this may sound like the opening shots of a French farce; there are thankfully, solutions at hand.

We here at OS Recruitment have a wide selection of health & safety jobs available to applicants of all grades and expertise. Although most of our health and safety manager vacancies require applicants to have a NEBOSH National Diploma level 4 and prior experience, we also have a range of health and safety assistant positions which require applicants to have no more than a few GCSEs and no experience.

So, regardless of whether you’re on your first rung of the health and safety ladder or want to develop an established career even further; make us here at OS recruitment your first port of call.

Develop a Career in Occupational Health and Safety

Filed under: Health and safety jobs — admin @ 10:00 am January 15, 2012

Unfortunately, there aren’t many careers these days that are impervious to the dire economic situation that we find ourselves in. However, one area that is bucking the trend and actually showing signs of employment growth is that of occupational health and safety.

Indeed, an ever-growing list of health and safety regulations, along with a very real fear of expensive compensation claims means that more companies than ever are now advertising health and safety jobs so that they can employ professional health and safety officers that will safeguard their companies interests. Furthermore, even when companies are required to make cutbacks and redundancies across vast areas of their operation, they cannot afford to cut back on their health and safety responsibilities as they have to comply with the law. And that means that occupational health and safety jobs will always be around for people who are suitably qualified to do them.

This can be very good news if you have a basic knowledge of workplace safety as, with the right training and development; you could apply for health and safety jobs and experience the benefits of working in one of the most buoyant and secure employment fields in the UK.

So, if you think you have what it takes to develop a career as a health and safety officer and want to apply for occupational health and safety jobs, explore our pages further here at OS Recruitment or call us now on 020 8203 0607.

Create a Safe Working Environment with a Fire Risk Assessment

Filed under: Health and safety jobs — admin @ 10:00 am November 15, 2011

All organisations are required to adhere to health and safety law, and a failure to do so can have major implications for a company. Therefore, it is essential that every company takes the necessary steps to ensure they continually adhere to the law to create a safe working environment for their employees and clients.

One way to ensure your organisation is safe is to hire a fire risk assessor who can visit your premises and conduct a thorough fire risk assessment. The fire risk assessor will then inform you about potential hazards in the workplace and will inform you how to avoid these risks. The fire risk assessment will also identify who the risks could potentially endanger, so you can undertake a plan of action to ensure their safety.

At OS Recruitment, as well as helping job seekers find the perfect health and safety jobs, we can provide you with professional fire risk assessments for your organisation. We will send an experienced and knowledgeable fire risk assessor to your company and can help you identify any potential dangers in your workplace.

Our fire risk assessors will assess whether or not hazardous substances might be a danger to your employees or customers, analyse your senior employee’s dedication to health and safety, prepare plans and procedures for accidents and emergencies, suggest control exposure of substances if required and we can even provide employee training and information.

So if you want to ensure your organisation is safe and free from dangerous fire hazards, you should contact us here at OS Recruitment.

Complementary Courses for the Occupational H&S CV

Filed under: Health and safety jobs — admin @ 10:16 am August 25, 2011

Career development in the Health & Safety jobs arena is usually a focal point for H&S professionals. Health and Safety jobs can offer wonderful opportunities for career development across a massive spectrum of industries.

Health and Safety is a complex, evolving and often challenging professional field. Career development in the form of industry specific qualifications (NVQs, NEBOSH diplomas, University Masters Degree etc.) can usually offer the best scope for furthering a career. For example, Health & Safety jobs in agriculture now focus heavily on environmental compliance and eco enhancement. A further qualification based around agriculture and countryside environmental business management could set you ahead of the game.

Experienced H&S officers usually cite early career diversity followed by continual specialist career development as being the key to accessing the best Health and Safety jobs. Local Authority H&S jobs tend to be diverse and offer great one-time H&S enforcement opportunities that could be invaluable down the career path no matter what your specialised sector. Citing the example of agriculture again, those occasions you spend as a Local Authority Health and Safety Enforcer in factories, schools, nature reserves etc. could complement specialised comprehensive knowledge of organic farming and trade legislation perfectly later on. The idea is to work within environments you may not have otherwise had the opportunity to, and to learn from the experience.

Tailored vocational courses such as fire safety, First Aid, heavy goods loading etc. can all boost your CV in the competitive world of H&S compliance.

Are You Up to Date on HSE Campaigns?

Filed under: Health and safety jobs — admin @ 10:04 am August 11, 2011

The Health and Safety Executive (HSE) maintains its role as the UK’s guiding light for Health & Safety both at home and in the workplace via a number of channels and modes. Perhaps one of the most accessible forms of instant HSE knowledge is via their numerous ongoing campaigns. As a professional seeking Health & Safety jobs nationwide, are you up to date?

Make the Promise

Health and Safety jobs are rarely more difficult than within agriculture. A career in agriculture can often mean increased danger in the workplace, especially if said workplace involves farm machinery or livestock. The “Make and Promise” campaign, launched in 2009 and continuing indefinitely, focuses around encouraging farmers and agricultural workers to “Come Home Safe” The campaign features comprehensive guidance and support for farmers where danger (e.g. managing livestock, climbing ladders, guiding tractors etc) is part of their daily working lives. The campaign has already taken home several prestigious awards, including Campaign of the Year award from the 2010 PR Awards.

Hidden Killer

The public and those in Health & Safety jobs are familiar with the idea of the dangers of asbestos. However, the HSE reported massive numbers of those outside Health and Safety jobs were unable to identify or safely handle the material. The campaign provides public guidance and support.

Shattered Lives

As a long-running campaign, “Shattered Lives” aims to highlight the number of trips and falls caused by hazards in the workplace that could have easily been avoided.

Resources Available for the Health and Safety Jobseeker
