Health and safety has become more and more integral to the operation of businesses in many different sectors and forms part of your lawful duty of care as an employer. There is no getting away with it: you must provide adequate safety measures for employees, or face the consequences. It was only a few decades ago that regulations were more lapse, resulting in higher rates of injury and even death while on the job. With increasing legislation and safety, greater pressure has been placed on occupational health and safety jobs, asking more of both the employer and the candidate. The employer must be up-to-date concerning government regulations and procedures, lest they face consequences which could range from small penalties to crippling fines and liability payouts. All in all, this could spell the end of your business, so there is no room for corner cutting, negligence or compromise. For the candidate it means getting the qualifications, constant vigilance and a dedication to the profession that ensures maximum safety for all people they are responsible for. When listing candidates, these are qualities we look for.

Health and Safety is Here to Stay

Filed under: Health and safety jobs — admin @ 8:20 am July 8, 2013

It’s a phrase people love to bounce around – health and safety gone mad! – but is there any truth in it? Those heading out day after day to carry out health and safety jobs like site risk assessments and maintenance projects certainly disagree with such an egregious comment about their profession.
So, in an age where our children can’t play ‘Pin the Tail on the Donkey’ due to health and safety concerns, has health and safety really gone mad?

First off, no regulatory body is preventing our children from playing ‘Pin the Tail on the Donkey’ It’s a myth. The case came up on the HSE (Health and Safety Executive) website in 2010 and centred around a member of the public asking the HSE why the game had been banned. The HSE’s response was a clear myth-buster – they had never banned the game, saying
“Not trusting children with drawing pins seems a little overprotective to us. After all, millions of children have been playing traditional party games like this for years without any problems.”

It’s this kind of myth that gives health and safety a strangling reputation and causes the rise of myths like the HSE banning flip-flops in the workplace (“Despite recent reports to the contrary, health and safety law doesn’t ban them.”) and step-ladders (“We have not banned stepladders – nor have we banned ladders!”)

Health & Safety Jobs
For those occupying health and safety officer jobs, it can seem like an uphill struggle. You know there is more to your role than popping up ‘RISK’ signs all over the place. You’re responsible for the daily wellbeing of employees, and that covers everything from mental heath to minimising the risk of slips, trips and falls.
So when critics roll out the ‘health and safety gone mad’ line, what should be your key responses?

Statistics from the HSE
Around 200 people die at work every year, and that’s not including work-related road fatalities. Thousands more deaths can be attributed to including work-related factors, e.g. cancers, respiratory diseases, etc.
According to the HSE, around 2 million people live with an ailment they say is the result of their working environment.
Up to 3% of the GDP – the equivalent of 30 million work days – are lost each year due to occupational ill health and injury.

5 Benefits of Health & Safety
1. Overall better health throughout the workforce
2. Reduced costs (better insurance premiums, higher profits due to productivity, etc.)
3. Higher productivity rates and fewer absences due to occupational health
4. Better reputation throughout the supply chain
5. Strong legal standing

Health and safety has a strong, vital role to play in today’s world. As a health & safety officer, your job is to promote it, implement it and stay on top of new developments that could alter the health & safety landscape for your employer. It’s important work, and something to be proud of.

Thinking about a Career in Health and Safety?

Filed under: Health and safety jobs — admin @ 9:24 am June 3, 2013

If you’re thinking about starting a career in health and safety, then you’ll probably have a lot of questions. Here, we do our very best to answer all of your questions relating to health and safety jobs.

1.) Are any qualifications required?
There are many different kinds of health and safety jobs out there, and the kinds of qualifications you need will depend on the role you want to do. Most people start with a short introductory course, but if you need something more in depth then a NEBOSH General Certificate qualification is a good start as it is well recognised. For most health and safety officer jobs, a NEBOSH General Certificate is the minimum qualification required, although for a greater level of knowledge you can go on to take the NEBOSH Diploma.

2.) Who is the right kind of candidate?
Health and safety officer jobs require candidates who have personal attributes and skills which suit the company. They usually have to be able to adapt to different situations quickly, as well as demonstrate a real interest in the role.

3.) Why is the health and safety role important?
All employers have a duty of care to their employees and to any visitors at their work premises. They are legally obliged to ensure that the working environment is safe and healthy to use. As most employers are not savvy about health and safety legislation and procedures themselves, they tend to employ the services of an external agency or of an in-house appointed person.

4.) What will you be expected to do?
As we have already mentioned, health and safety officer jobs vary between organisations, but broadly speaking, you will be responsible for ensuring the health and safety of all employees and visitors to the workplace. This includes keeping on top of current legislation relating to health and safety, ensuring staff are aware of the necessary procedures and requirements of them, ensure there is an up-to-date and accurate health and safety notice displayed in the workplace, and make sure that there is the right kind of equipment supplied to employees who need it.

You will also be required to carry out risk assessments to determine the health and safety needs in your particular workplace, without which you won’t be able to ensure the right equipment and procedures are in place. Another important part of the role is to create health and safety policies in keeping with the law and relating to the risks in the workplace, and to keep them up-to-date. You will need to make sure that these are put into practice by all workers, both temporary and permanent.

Of course, a workplace is an ever-changing environment and you will need to carry out the risk assessments on a regular basis, as well as carrying out inspections to ensure everything is being done correctly. In the event of an accident or injury at work (by a worker or visitor), you may be responsible for logging the accident and maintaining accident records, although this could equally be the role of the First Aid Officer on-site.

Occupational health and safety jobs are integral to the economy in the United Kingdom and provide a worthwhile service that the vast majority of businesses use at some stage. Being able to keep your staff healthy is all important in terms of productivity, loyalty and continuity, but not only that, OH will improve the reputation of your organisation as one that cares about its employees and future. At Occupational Health Recruitment, we can not only offer professionals, we can also offer a range of services which you might be interested in if you don’t require a full time occupational health position.

Temporary Positions

We have an extensive range of occupational health professionals who can instantly slot into your organisation to provide a temporary service. Whether you need OH physicians, advisers or risk assessments, our health and safety vacancies ensure that you will be able to get the right person for the job, at the right price.

Part of the temporary solution is being able to offer screening projects, no matter where you are in the country. Staff may need to have audiometry tests, pre-employment screening, HAVS, lone worker and night worker tests, bespoke screening and NHS pre-placement medicals. Of course, if you find that you require a permanent full time position we can offer occupational health and safety jobs to you no matter what sector you are in. Our fees are as competitive as any other agency, particularly since we can provide discount rates for Sole Agency and PSL agreements.

Physicians

One of the most important occupational health and safety jobs is that of a physician. You may require them for important consultancy work in a variety of different capacity including those that work to ongoing contracts. Other organisations do not require constant work, and as such, we provide Ad-hoc Days as well as Ad-Hoc Case Management/Report writing. We can also provide candidates for permanent positions as well as locum cover and audits.

DSE Risk Assessment

With so many visual display units in our daily lives it is no wonder that there are requirements for working with them. Illnesses stemming from particular occupations can result in insurance claims and costly absences. It is no wonder that there are requirements for businesses to have clear DSE solutions in place. At OH Recruitment we have already attracted DSE specialists through our health and safety vacancies. We therefore have a great depth of potential candidates for you if you want to employ them, or alternatively, you can use us to carry out the risk assessments for you. This will include liaising with managers before and after, on site consultation, a full ergonomic assessment, recommendations for equipment as well as a review of medical statuses, assessments of vehicles and referrals to independent OH physicians.

Other Services

We also offer other services which will give you full coverage when it comes to occupational health. This includes vehicle risk assessments, flu vaccination programmes, audits (including stress auditing and counselling), consulting and pregnancy risk assessments. With all of this on your side, your business is likely to be more efficient and resilient.

The vital role played by health and safety professionals

Filed under: Health and safety officer jobs — admin @ 9:28 am March 18, 2013

Health and safety officer jobs can be rewarding and they are also hugely important. Without the skills of the specialists who perform these roles, workplaces would be much more dangerous places.

If you’re looking for positions like this, you can feel confident that your expertise will be in demand among employers for the foreseeable future. After all, without people like you, employers would struggle to remain up-to-date with all the relevant legislation.

New draft guidance issued

Highlighting the changeable nature of health and safety rules, the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) recently published new draft guidance concerning workplace first aid. Two pieces of guidance have been released on the HSE website following a consultation to amend the First Aid Regulations (1981) and remove the requirement for HSE to approve first aid training providers.

The changes are expected to take effect on October 1st, subject to final approval by ministers and the HSE board.

Greater flexibility

Commenting on the proposed alterations, HSE policy advisor Peter Brown said: “Removing the HSE approval process will give businesses greater flexibility to choose their own training providers and first aid training that is right for their work place, based on their needs assessment and their individual business needs.

“The draft guidance documents aim to provide practical support to help businesses assess and understand their first aid needs and find a provider best suited to them. HSE has used the feedback from the recent consultation exercise to shape the guidance, but would welcome any further feedback on the guidance before the regulations come into place.”

Further details

Until the rules are officially changed, firms requiring first aid training will still have to use an HSE approved provided.

Meanwhile, when the new regulations come into force, employers will still have to ensure that they have adequate first aid provision based on an assessment of their individual business needs. Also, the HSE will retain a role in setting standards by controlling the syllabus content for basic first aid at work qualifications.

You might also be buoyed by the news that private sector job creation is up and certain regions are doing particularly well. It noted that the north-east has seen employment rise by 2.2 per cent over the course of the past four sets of monthly data from the Office for National Statistics (ONS), covering a period between early summer and November. This is over five times greater than the national increase of 0.4 per cent.

More stats

In Yorkshire and the Humber and in the West Midlands, job creation has increased by 1.7 per cent 1.2 per cent respectively, the ONS data shows.

Meanwhile, unemployment across the UK as a whole has dropped from 12 per cent just over a year ago to 9.1 per cent.

Engineering, manufacturing and exporting

If you’re keen to find health and safety vacancies in the engineering, manufacturing or exporting sectors, you may be particularly pleased by comments made by James Ramsbotham, chief executive of the North East Chamber of Commerce. He suggested that growth in his region has occurred “mainly on the back” of these industries.

He added: “Almost every decent business we’re talking to at the moment are talking about how many more people they are taking on.”

Also commenting on jobs growth, Len Cruddas, chief executive of the Leeds, York and North Yorkshire Chamber of Commerce, said he had been picking up lots more “positive news” from the business community. He remarked: “Those companies that had problems have gone. There are still a few zombies around but a lot of growing businesses too.”

Sourcing the right health and safety professionals for your firm

When trading conditions are tough, you might need to cut down on certain areas of your workforce, but health and safety personnel no doubt remain vital. After all, any lapses in risk management that occur can have devastating consequences, both in terms of human suffering and from a legal perspective.

The good news is, it’s now straightforward to source skilled individuals to fill health and safety jobs.

Injury stats

Highlighting the importance of safety specialists, the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) recently released figures relating to workplace ill-health and injury in the UK. It revealed that between April 2011 and March 2012, there were 22,433 major injuries, including amputations, fractures and burns. This represented a rate of 89.9 injuries per 100,000 workers and was a fall from the 24,944 recorded the previous year. It was also considerably beneath the average for the last five years of 103,627.

More figures

In addition, there were 88,731 other injuries serious enough to keep people off work for four or more days. This was a drop from 91,742 the previous year.

Meanwhile, the HSE also noted that around 1.1 million individuals said they were suffering from an illness caused or made worse by their work. This was down from 1.2 million in 2010-11.

Welcome

Responding to the findings, HSE chair Judith Hackitt said: “Any reduction in the number of people being injured or made unwell by their jobs should be welcomed. Given the challenging economic conditions which many sectors have faced in recent years it is particularly encouraging to see continued reductions in levels of injury and ill health.

“Britain has earned the reputation of being one of the safest places in Europe to work, but there is still plenty of room for improvement. We need to ensure that we all focus on managing the real risks which lead to serious workplace harm.”

She added that the HSE remains committed to helping employers understand what they need to do to ensur their personnel remain safe.

There will always be demand for health and safety professionals

It’s true that the jobs market in the UK and many other countries around the world has seen better days. Economic conditions have driven down demand for workers and many people are struggling to find the right sort of roles or indeed any employment at all.

However, if you’re on the lookout for health and safety jobs, you have good reason to remain positive. Whereas firms can withstand axing certain positions, they cannot get away with compromising the wellbeing of their personnel by cutting back on risk management. Therefore, there will always be demand for individuals with the skills required to maintain standards.

As long as you’re proactive and go about searching health and safety vacancies in the best ways, you might well find the jobs you’re looking for.

At the heart of what we do

Drawing attention to the importance of effective risk management recently, Health and Safety Executive (HSE) chair Judith Hackitt stated: “We want employers to focus on the real risks that continue to cause death and serious injury.

“HSE is working very hard to make it easier for people to understand what they need to do and to focus on the real priorities. Protecting people from death and serious injury at work should be at the heart of what we all do.”

Thought provoking stats

She made her comments in the wake of the release of HSE figures that revealed 173 workers lost their lives while performing their roles in the UK between April 2011 and March this year.

While this was down by two from the previous 12-month period, the rate of fatal injury remained static at 0.6 per 100,000 workers. This was because the workforce shrank slightly.

The real tragedy

Ms Hackitt added: “Britain continues to have one of the lowest levels of workplace fatal injuries in Europe, part of a long term downward trend. But we must not forget that these are lives cut short, not statistics – every single one of these deaths will have caused terrible grief and anguish for family and friends as well as workmates and colleagues.

“This is the real tragedy of health and safety failures – lives cut short and loved ones lost.”

Come to us

If you’re determined to help make a difference and protect individuals at work, as well as advance your personal career, you’ve come to the right place.

Here at OS Recruitment we’re experts in the placement of health, safety, environment and quality professionals.
